The Middle Illinois River Region includes six counties: LaSalle, Livingston, Marshall, Peoria, Putnam, and Stark. There are a variety of surface water management and groundwater concerns in the Middle Illinois River Region, including (1) the Streator and Pontiac community systems; (2) low flow management on the Illinois River; (3) interactions between bedrock aquifers and flow in the Illinois River; (4) potential fracking effects on groundwater supplies in the region; (5) water quality in strip aquifers along the river; and (6) elevated radium in deep bedrock aquifers.

Work is currently underway in this region. Activities include (1) water demand forecasting; (2) evaluating streamflow availability for the region’s tributary streams; (3) evaluating low flows on the Illinois River; (4) investigating the Pontiac and Streator water supply systems to determine adequacy of their supply during extreme drought episodes; (5) compiling and evaluating existing maps and data, including water level, water use, water chemistry, and aquifer properties data; (6) identifying and instrumenting observation wells; (7) updating hydrogeological information; (8) collecting samples for groundwater chemistry; and (9) constructing a groundwater flow model.
