MRCC Summer GIS Climate Intern
To serve in a support role within the service and research-based environment at the Midwestern Regional Climate Center (MRCC) with GIS assistance working with historical climate data.
Duties & Responsibilities: This position is designed to expose the student intern to the range of GIS and climate service needs of the MRCC. The intern will assist MRCC climate scientists and GIS specialists with the modifications and development of tools that present historical climate information within a spatial framework. They will apply their knowledge of GIS, computational skills, and physical science principles to assist in the MRCC’s goals to present climate information in a useful and usable manner. Additional duties may include performing quality control analyses on historical climate data and filling climate data requests. Ability to communicate effectively within a team environment is required.
Education & Experience: Required: At least 6 college-level credits in GIS science and techniques and at least 6 college-level credits in a physical science discipline
Preferred: At least 9 college-level credits in GIS science and techniques, at least 3 college-level credits in computer programming, and at least 9 college-level credits in an atmospheric science discipline
Required: Using GIS to read and create spatial data (feature and raster); Using GIS to create visualizations of spatial data; Experience working with historical climate data
Preferred: Using scripts and programming languages to read scientific data that can be presented based upon user-defined parameters; Using geoprocessing tools to create derived spatial data
Required: ArcGIS, basic climate science
